Desirable Characteristics of Learning Companions
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigated the desirable characteristics of anthropomorphized learning-companion agents for college students. First, interviews with six undergraduates explored their concepts of desirable learning companions. The interviews yielded agent competency, agent personality, and interaction control. Next, a controlled experiment examined whether learner competency (strong vs. weak) would relate directly to agent competency (high vs. low) and to interaction control (agent-control vs. learner-control). The dependent measures included learners’ perceptions of agent functionality, their self-efficacy beliefs in the task, and their learning. The results indicated that academically strong students perceived the high-competent agent higher than the low-competent agent and showed higher self-efficacy beliefs in the task and recalled more after working with the high-competent agent. Academically weak students, by contrast, showed higher self-efficacy and recalled more after working with the low-competent agent. Also, academically strong students valued agent-control highly, but academically weak students valued learner-control. The strong students showed higher self-efficacy in agent-control but lower self-efficacy in learner-control than did the weak students. In general, the results indicated that the similarities of characteristics between an agent and a learner have positive impacts on learners’ cognitive and affective attainments.

Modeling curiosity for virtual learning companions
Curiosity is an emotional motivation that drives knowledge acquisition in learning context. Studies have shown that curiosity positively influences social learning and a peer learner’s curiosity may elicit the curiosity of other learners. Hence, modeling curiosity in learning companions may improve human learners’ learning experience in virtual environments. However, curiosity has not been expl...

In this study, the researchers attempted to extend the concept of learning companions from the virtual world to the real physical environment and made a breakthrough in technique development of tangible learning robots. The aim of this study was to explore an innovative way by combining the speech recognition technology with educational robots in the hope that the state-of-the-art technology co...
متن کاملMigrating artificial companions (demonstration)
A BST R A C T Migration is the ability of an agent to transfer from one embodiment, for example a robot, to another such as a mobile phone. For agents that are to act as personal companions migration is desirable as access to different capabilities can provide more constant companionship to a user. This interactive demonstration of screen to phone migration illustrates one application of the op...
متن کاملRepresentations of Animal Companions on Student Learning Perception: Static, Animated and Tangible
Educational agents (including animal companions) are a kind of interface agent, which is a significant component in educational systems, and has great impacts on student learning. However, with the development of emerging technologies (e.g., tangible technology), few studies have yet investigated how tangible technology can be used to combine with animal companions to foster student learning an...
متن کامل"Thanks Alisha, Keep in Touch": Gender Effects and Engagement with Virtual Learning Companions
Virtual learning companions have shown significant potential for supporting students. However, there appear to be gender differences in their effectiveness. In order to support all students well, it is important to develop a deeper understanding of the role that student gender plays during interactions with learning companions. This paper reports on a study to explore the impact of student gend...
